Who is Bill Gurley?
Bill Gurley is a venture investor associated with Benchmark and the author of Above the Crowd. His writing examines business models and valuation, including why companies with similar revenue can deserve very different assessments.
How the method works
His 2011 essay on revenue quality challenges simple sales multiples. Predictability, customer retention, margins, competitive advantages, growth and dependence on other businesses all affect the cash a revenue stream might eventually produce.
What makes the approach distinctive
The distinctive insight is that a dollar of sales is not a standardized unit of value. Recurring, defensible revenue with attractive economics differs from revenue that must continually be repurchased through marketing or depends on a powerful partner. The essay also recognizes that cash-flow forecasts for young companies rest on uncertain inputs.
Put two businesses side by side. Use the playbook to record retention evidence, gross margin, customer acquisition needs and concentration. Then write down the future performance that the current valuation appears to require. Missing disclosure should stay marked unknown.Trendstockers takeaway, not an investor quotation
Where it can go wrong
High-quality revenue can still be overpriced. Early growth can hide weak cash generation, and private-company investment terms can differ sharply from public shares. The essay’s reference to a 10-times revenue club is not a recommended multiple for the company you are researching.
